Week 7
A workshop with the staff
We were looking forward to the workshop but also felt nervous at the same time. As the mural is located at their working space, so we think that it’s better having them work on the mural with us.
01. In preparation
Licensed Professionals
Three days before workshop we were informed that there will be 30 people joining the workshop which made us even more nervous. This is the first time we ever conduct a workshop with adult and with this many people. Usually working on the mural I think 5 people in a group is the max but 30 people? However, it is a good opportunity for us to experience that and figure out by ourselves.

They suggested that they can also take part in the waiting area which initially ours job to do it. I was a bit worried because the design for the waiting area is much complicated. However, we needed to consider it since there was no way 30 people can work on a mural. Therefore, Aisha and I decided to simplify the design of the mural.

we removed all the small details and thin lines and kept it simple

In order to have a success workshop, we need to be well-prepared. There were three tasks that needed to be completed before the work shop which were
Preparing stencil

Mixing color

Numbering

Before sketching, we already done two layer of sealer since we didn’t get the chance to do that with the murals in the paediatric room. Unlike the canvas sealer, the wall sealer need to be applied before the wall paint which is a new thing for us
We needed to well mixed and make a big batch of each colour because there are two walls that needed to be painted. We tried to use the same colours for the two murals so it was not so complicated for the staff.
After mixing the colours, we numbered them and drew the number according to the colour of the paint and the parts in the design. We decided to do that because it helped the staff to work more effectively and did not need to spend a lot of time to find and mix the color.
02. D-day
The workshop day

The workshop started at 1.30pm and ended at 5.30pm on Saturday. Besides the staff, there were two directors of two department that we were under and one chief of the medical board came down and join us for the workshop.
After their welcome speech, it was our briefing for the workshop. We decided to divide 30 people into two teams and each team was assigned to one wall. Aisha and I, each of us will guide and advise one wall and worked closely with them. In each team, they were divided into smaller groups and each group was assigned to different parts of the wall. In each group they needed to discuss about the roles among themselves which had tapping, cleaning, painting, and preparing.
I was actually glad to have them working on the mural with us because the wall was so much bigger than I thought and it might be impossible for us to complete the wall in a week with only two of us. It was the teamwork that made everything became so much easier.
They were very focused on the mural and worked well together. One thins about KKH that I love to most is the people here. Everyone is friendly even the directors. They bought us food, and took care of us. By the end of the workshop, they even stay longer to help us out with the murals. I think the workshop was a success since everyone was having fun. We also received a lot of help from them so I was very happy when knowing that they like the workshop.
03. The day after
The day after the workshop
The next day, we focused on the long wall mural and tried to finish it up. With long wall mural, the design was not so complex compared to the waiting area, so we decided to touch it up first.
The workshop really helped us with the layers, but not so much with the shape which was understandable. Aisha and I and spent a lot of time to refine and reshape the figures and the characters. After 6 hours, we only managed to finish 80% of it .

We needed to come down on Tuesday (one extra day) to finish this mural or else would not be able to finish the waiting area by week 8. Therefore, the Tuesday of week 8, we came down to the hospital and finished it.
